While the manufacturing industry in the United States is on the rise, there is a real shortage in the workforce that is impacting the growth of many manufacturing businesses. Skilled trade positions are becoming harder and harder to fill and it is limiting the growth of this very important industry.

According to the American Machinist publication, 70% of the Machinist workforce is over the age of 45. This is becoming a major problem as the aging workers begin to retire.

Machine Plus is committed to working with our local communities’ youth to help them better understand the value of skilled trade careers. We strive to show high school students and young college students that machinist work is exciting, challenging, fulfilling, and important!

The Road to Becoming a Machinist

There are thousands of open machinist positions in the United States. The good news is that there is a relatively low barrier to entry into the field. Most machinists begin working right out of high school, with 12-18 months of on the job training or a 1-2-year apprenticeship. Others take a 2-year machining associates program at a community college and technical school. Here, you can learn the fundamentals of advanced technologies such as CNC, CAD, and CAM programming.

There are multiple career paths and room for continual growth once you land a machinist position, such as:

  • Entry level CNC operator
  • CNC machinist
  • CAD/CAM or CNC programmer
  • Quality control & inspection
  • Equipment maintenance
  • Production planning
  • Engineering
  • Shop floor manager

We encourage students to learn all they can about the machinist profession. Breaking into the industry as a young machinist will set you up for great career opportunities into the future. The facility at Machine Plus has advanced technology, a collaborative environment, and projects in a variety of different industries.

Our apprentice programs are designed to train the next generation of machinist!
